The theme to the new Ghosbusters movie has been released and critics are piling in to give it a rough ride on social media.

Guitar-heavy track Ghostbusters (I’m Not Afraid), by Fall Out Boy featuring rapper Missy Elliott, is in stark contrast to the original by Ray Parker Jr.

Ray’s popular Ghostbusters was a chart-topping smash in the US and the popularity of the film was reflected in the UK singles chart where it reached number two in 1984.

The new song feels like a deconstruction of Ray’s 1980s hit and although it retains the famous “Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters!” refrain and elements of the original melody and lyrics, fans are not happy.

The trailer for the all-female Ghostbusters reboot starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones has already broken the record for the most disliked video in YouTube history. What else can possibly go wrong for the forthcoming movie?

Directed by Paul Feig, the film reunites him with Bridesmaids stars Melissa and Kristen alongside Saturday Night Live regulars Kate and Leslie.

As tends to be the case with reboots, many fans of the original Ghostbusters, which starred Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, the late Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson, never wanted a remake.

On Twitter, it seems people are lining up to take a dig at the new Ghostbusters theme song.
