American actress and singer Lindsay Lohan joined a wave of politicians and celebrities who have taken to social media to air strong views about the EU referendum.

The 29-year-old tweeted strong support for Britain to remain in the European Union by weighing in on the debate over the British economy and lashing out at Leave politicians appearing on the BBC overnight referendum programme.

As the first results of the count were announced, with many showing a vote to leave the EU, she tweeted about the pound: “will take you about 15 years to get it back up #REMAIN instead.”

Born and raised in New York, the Mean Girls star alluded to Britain’s political history and suggested that healthcare would improve if Britain voted to stay in the EU.

She said: “Workplace fatalities in the UK have reduced by half since European safety directives were introduced in 1996,” and later added: “more research and care for all children will come if we #Remain.”

Lindsay angered a number of followers by publicly criticising individual UK cities. After tweeting: “#Bury what’s wrong with you Manchester??????”

Ryan (@ryanwilliams97) responded: “Shut up you’re not even British leave Manchester alone” and Michael J Dolan (@MichaelJDolan) added: “Can tell you’ve never been to Bury.”

She also made a direct attack on former London mayor Boris Johnson by posting: “@BorisJohnson using your child’s graduation for CAMPAIGN? sounds like someone in USA who used a child out of wedlock for PR.”

British singer Lily Allen also caught the actress’s attention with her tweets in support of remaining in the EU.

The pair both tweeted negative comments about American presidential nominee Donald Trump who is in the UK to visit his golf clubs in Scotland.
