Review: Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing, iPhone, £2.99

The Sonic franchise has faltered at many points over the years, since the blue hedgehog first made a bolt for it in his platforming prime.

Hits — and more misses — have followed, so you could be forgiven for cranking this racer up on your iPhone with more than a little trepidation.

But fear not, it’s a karting classic in the making, and one that has no qualms about seeing what works best (Mario Kart!) and then using unique track design and a cast of the very finest Sega characters to give it true credibility in its own right.

From the delicately balanced difficulty of tracks to the need to master in-race drifting to extract the most from your vehicle, All-Stars Racing is just what the handheld doctor ordered.

And the sheer speed that you’ll hurtle round the tracks sings out Sonic’s stand-out characteristic (aside from the blue Mohican, that is) and makes this a welcome addition to the hedgehog’s franchise family.
