Review: The Robin Hood, Mawdesley

After an Anglezarke ramble my daughter and I were famished and ready for a hearty meal so we ventured to The Robin Hood, in rural Mawdesley.

From the list of tempting options I plumped for a Sunday roast board special - soup starter with lamb or pork and the usual trimmings, for main.

I've had carrot and tomato soup before and found it very tomato-y with a hint of carrot. But this version was an even split of both ingredients and smooth blended. Also served piping hot.

My lamb main course included a generous helping of non-grissly carved slices topped with lots of real' gravy. Lovely. A few real roasties were delicious and the fresh vegetables - carrots, broccoli and cauliflower - were crisp and crunchy fresh. But I would have preferred more veg' and less of the fresh new potatoes in skins which half-filled my plate. But for £7.95 there isn't much room for complaint!

My daughter's side order of garlic bread with cheese, as a starter, went down well more for the fact that that it was served on a crusty garlic baguette with loads of melted cheddar.

Moving onto a delicious cheese-topped pesto roasted vegetable lasagne, packed with juicy courgettes and tomato, she was already slightly stuffed' even though she'd ordered chips as well, as the meal came with only dressed salad with cucumber, peppers, lettuce and creamy coleslaw. With mains around the £10 mark and starters from £3-£6.95, her nosh was just under £15.

We skipped dessert but a cool Stella and J2O were refreshing in the summer sun!

With children's play area and outdoor seating this oldie worldly 16th century family-run pub is well suited for families with meals to suit all.

My only real niggle is the over-friendly service. Keen waitress staff quick to remove every empty plate and ask how the food was made me feel they wanted the table, knew who I was or thought I planned a runner!
