Gordon is the right choice for PM

Tony Blair announced that he will resign as Prime Minister on June 27 following a speech to Labour Party members in his constituency of Sedgefield.

The last few weeks in Westminster have been a hive of activity with contenders for the leadership and deputy leadership desperate to find support from MPs.

In the end no challenger could find enough MPs to nominate them and get onto to ballot paper for the leadership race, leaving Gordon Brown unopposed.

I nominated Gordon Brown and believe that he is best placed to become the next Prime Minister.

Perhaps more interesting is the election for deputy leader. With six candidates on the ballot paper, party members have a wealth of choice over who they wish to succeed John Prescott.

Only time will tell but hopefully we will have a smooth transition to the new leadership team so that we can continue with the business of government.

Christian Aid Week celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Christian Aid Week is the largest house-to-house collection in the United Kingdom, with the involvement of more than 300,000 volunteers and 20,000 local churches and committees.

The collection helps raise funds for Christian Aid as well as helping to raise the profile of the work they do whilst attracting vital publicity to campaigns. With estimates showing that 1.3 billion people live in extreme poverty, the work done by Christian Aid is extremely important. I would like to thank all those people in Chorley who take part in collecting for Christian Aid Week .As this is the first article I have written since the induction of Chorley's new mayor, I would like to take this opportunity to wish Councillor Adrian Lowe and his Mayoress Councillor Marion Lowe all the very best for the next mayoral year.

I am sure that both Adrian and Marion will enjoy the year and manage to raise funds for the local charities.

I would also like to pay tribute to the retiring mayor, Mary Wilson. Mary has shown tremendous courage and commitment to carry out her duties as mayor despite her battle with cancer.
