I recently visited the Chorley Music Café based on Railway Street for a tour of the facility.

The centre provides a hub for young people who want to experiment and develop their musical skills with modern midi digital recording equipment and a variety of musical instruments at their disposal.

The centre also provides a dedicated rehearsal space coupled with a much-needed venue for young people who want to watch up and coming local bands.

I also met the well known MC Tony Ryan who is promoting a message, through his music, to young people, not to carry knives or guns.

All too often young people are given negative publicity. I feel that the staff and young people who use the Chorley Music Café must be given credit for their work and the positive impact this has on our community.

Music is a powerful tool for sending messages out to young people and we have to use this to our advantage. Tony Ryan’s work in helping deter young people from getting involved with knives and guns is an excellent example of this which should be encouraged wherever possible.

Chorley Rugby Union Club hosted their Open Day on Saturday and entertained visitors with a variety of activities.

Rugby displays were held and Chorley Rugby Union club has been very successful in recent years in attracting new players, particular younger people.

Congratulations to Alison Hansford and all the volunteers who helped organise the Open Day and, more importantly, who work hard all year round.

Sporting activity amongst the young came to the fore again with the Lancashire Youth Games held at Stanley Park in Blackpool. Participants from Chorley were well represented and enjoyed their share of success.

On the theme of congratulations I would like to pay tribute to all those who received awards as part of the Chorley Smile campaign. The awards covered many different aspects of community life.
